A Mexican American woman is the first female kicker at Jackson State University, an NCAA Division I historically black college and university.

Leilani Armenta told CNN that although she was nervous before taking the field for the team’s September 23 game against rival Bethune-Cookman University, she also knew that she had a job to do. She insisted that her focus was solely on the game.

At first, I was like, “Okay, I’m playing.” Armenta declared, “I’m playing football.”
